The STARS programme: Nursery and Infant school, Carlton Vale Nursery and Infant School

STARS (Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe) is Transport for London’s (TfL) school travel plan accreditation programme. It provides a framework and guidance for educational establishments to put in place a travel plan. It rewards their achievements and commitment to encourage safer and active travel such as walking, cycling and road safety. The scheme helps identify issues, identify how pupils and staff currently travel to school, set targets, monitor progress and celebrate success.
The video features Carlton Vale School in the London borough of Brent. This video shows a full-time nursery school serving pupils aged between three and seven years old. Carlton Vale has been a part of the STARS scheme for the past eight years and it is the first nursery school to attain a Gold level in STARS. The school was awarded with a STARS School of Excellence award too. The school encourages walking, scooting and cycling activities by building learning outside of the classroom. This gains support and understanding from parents and involves them in travel planning and adapts their travel plan to make their activities appropriate for their pupils’ needs.
